Description

This Western has become a modest cult favorite since its release in 1993, when the film was met with mixed reviews but the performances of Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp) and especially Val Kilmer, for his memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holliday, garnered high praise. The movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some well-handled action on the part of Rambo director George P. Cosmatos, who has yet to make a better film than this. --Jeff Shannon

Retired lawman Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) finds his attempt to settle down in the mining town of Tombstone, Arizona, tested when he, his friend Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer), and brothers Virgil (Sam Elliott) and Morgan (Bill Paxton) clash with a band of outlaws. The ensuing feud comes to a boil in a violent battle at the O.K. Corral and leads to a bloody vendetta ride. Exciting and stylish western also stars Michael Biehn, Powers Boothe, Dana Delany, and Charlton Heston. 130 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: Spanish; theatrical trailers.

Description

When Cosmos was first broadcast in 1980, our world--and the context of Carl Sagan's eloquent "personal journey"--was a different place. The late Dr. Sagan would be pleased to witness the cooling of the Cold War, the continued exploration of space, and ongoing efforts to curb our destructive dependence on fossil fuels. For Sagan's series is far more than a guided tour through "billions and billions" of stars and galaxies. It remains a profound plea for the unity of humankind, for the recognition that "we are a way for the universe to know itself," with an obligation to know our origin, our place in the universe, and our future potential. In the course of 13 fascinating hours, Cosmos spans its own galaxy of topics to serve Sagan's theme, each segment deepening our understanding of how we got from there (simple microbes in the primordial mud) to here (space-faring civilization in the 21st century). In his "ship of the imagination," Sagan guides us to the farthest reaches of space and takes us back into the history of scientific inquiry, from the ancient library of Alexandria to the NASA probes of our neighboring planets. Upon this vast canvas Sagan presents the "cosmic calendar," placing the 15-billion-year history of the universe into an accessible one-year framework, then filling it with a stunning chronology of events, both interstellar and earthbound. From the lives of the stars to creation theories, functions of the human brain, and the ongoing search for extraterrestrial intelligence, Cosmos asks big questions. When appropriate, Sagan offers big answers, or asks still bigger--and yes, even spiritual--questions at the boundaries of science and religion. What's most remarkable about Cosmos is that it remains almost entirely fresh, with few updates needed to the science that Sagan so passionately celebrates. It is no exaggeration to say that Cosmos--for all the debate it may continue to provoke--is a vital document for humanity at a pivotal crossroads of our history. --Jeff Shannon

The award-winning PBS series that took viewers to the outer reaches of the universe and back billions and billions of years to the beginning of time, all in the company of host Dr. Carl Sagan, to explore mankind's place in the cosmic puzzle is available in a seven-disc boxed set that includes all 13 episodes. 13 hrs. total on seven discs. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround; Subtitles: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish; isolated music track; science update subtitle track; scene access.

Description

Baltimore Orioles Legends: Cal Ripken Jr. Collector's Edition captures one of the most electrifying moments in modern television: Ripken's breaking of one of sport's most unbreakable records, Lou Gehrig's streak of 2130 consecutive games played. The irony is that the record itself is not that exciting--just carrying your lunch pail to work every day--and barring some bizarre weather event or freak injury, everyone knew it was going to happen at Camden Yards on September 6, 1996, and the game unfolded pretty normally, other than guests such as Earl Weaver arriving in the broadcast booth to ramble about Ripken. But as soon as the game became official and Ripken grew tired of basking in the applause, he took an impromptu victory lap around the stadium slapping hands with the fans, and the ESPN broadcast crew had the rare insight to stay silent and let the moment speak for itself. But Ripken didn't stop at 2131, and neither does this six-disc set. It has four other complete and significant games, including a 1996 three-homer game vs. Seattle, game 1 of the 1996 ALDS against Cleveland, a six-for-six performance against the Braves in 1999, and the 2001 All-Star Game in which he was voted the MVP (and starting AL shortstop Alex Rodriguez playfully pushed him back to his original position to start the game). On the last disc is a one-hour documentary from 2001, The Iron Man's Legendary Career, recapping his career (early quote: "I want to get used to playing every day") with interviews by Ripken, Earl Weaver, Fred Lynn, and peer shortstops Alex Rodriguez, Omar Vizquel, Derek Jeter, and Nomar Garciaparra. More interviews and game clips round out the package for one of the most-respected and classiest figures in sports history. --David Horiuchi

O's fans can celebrate the Iron Man's legacy with this package that presents five highlight games from his remarkable career in their entirety. Relive his 3-hit effort in game 1 of the 1996 ALDS against the Indians; his monster 1996 3-homer, 8-RBI game versus the Mariners; his 6-for-6 day against the Braves in 1999; his final, MVP-winning All-Star Game in 2001; and, of course, game 2,131 from 1996. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; documentary; featurettes.

Amazon Best Books of the Month, October 2011: The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse is a joyous celebration of art and creativity. As a young man, Carle was influenced by the work of Franz Marc, an Expressionist artist famous for his paintings of blue horses, and this book is a fitting tribute to his legacy. Carle’s brilliant, unusual, color pairings--a red crocodile, a polka-dotted donkey--capture the limitless imagination of children and the brief text is simple, yet memorable. The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse is destined to become a well-worn classic, inspiring readers of all ages to embrace their inner artist.--Seira Wilson

Description

One of the best-selling science books ever published in the English language. Author Carl Sagan died in 1996. Associated Press: "Carl Sagan is one of the most brilliant scientists of our times... He has done an excellent writing job as he delves into the past, present, and future of science, dealing with the mindstaggering enormity of the cosmos in which we exist." New York Times Book Review: "Enticing, imaginative, readable, iridescent." This book has a bound full color glossy center photo insert.

Cosmos was the first science TV blockbuster, and Carl Sagan was its (human) star. By the time of Sagan's death in 1996, the series had been seen by half a billion people; Sagan was perhaps the best-known scientist on the planet. Explaining how the series came about, Sagan recalled: I was positive from my own experience that an enormous global interest exists in the exploration of the planets and in many kindred scientific topics--the origin of life, the Earth, and the Cosmos, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, our connection with the universe. And I was certain that this interest could be excited through that most powerful communications medium, television. Sagan's own interest and enthusiasm for the universe were so vivid and infectious, his screen presence so engaging, that viewers and readers couldn't help but be caught up in his vision. From stars in their "billions and billions" to the amino acids in the primordial ocean, Sagan communicated a feeling for science as a process of discovery. Inevitably, some of the science in Cosmos has been outdated in the years since 1980--but Sagan's sense of wonder is ageless. --Mary Ellen Curtin
